Safety plan discussion in executive session is a step away from law after Tuesday’s legislative action.
Senators passed House Bill 1048, which permits a school board to discuss and deliberate school safety plans, and other provisions, in executive session, on a 32-0 vote. The unanimous vote marked the fourth time the bill didn’t receive one “nay.”
Sen. V.J. Smith told fellow Senators on the floor the bill “keeps the bad guys from knowing the security plans of the good guys.”
ASBSD supports the bill and Executive Director Wade Pogany noted during his testimony in front of the Senate State Affairs committee, the proposal permits school boards to hold discussions to “protect all children” in executive session with “very detailed, very clear instruction” about what can be covered.
HB 1048 now heads to Gov. Noem for her review and potential signature.
