Pledge bill passed by committee, House

A bill that requires the reciting of the pledge of allegiance at the start of each school day in every public school classroom is assured of seeing the Senate.

House Bill 1150 passed the House State Affairs committee and the House of Representatives on unanimous votes this week.

ASBSD supports the bill.

“The message (school board members) wanted me to send to you: in our (education) world there are certain things that are more important than local control and this (bill) is one of them,” ASBSD Executive Director Wade Pogany testified before the House State Affairs committee.

In November, ASBSD member districts unanimously passed a resolution (B7 Pledge of Allegiance) at the Association’s Delegate Assembly event.

Pogany said many school districts are already saying the Pledge in school and board members felt reciting the Pledge would teach students about patriotism, honoring the United States and remembering the men and women who have served our country.

“We need to have our children…understand where these freedoms come from,” Rep. Hal Wick, the bill’s sponsor, said during his statement on the House floor.

HB 1150 now moves to the Senate.
