School safety plan bill sent to Senate floor

A bill that would require school districts to develop safety plans and conduct of lockdown drills was unanimously approved by members of the Senate Education committee on Thursday (1/29).

“School boards and teachers and administrators are all concerned with the safety of our kids,” ASBSD Executive Director Wade Pogany testified in support of Senate Bill 89. “Schools have been involved in creating safety plans for a long time.”

S.D. Secretary of Education Melody Schopp said school would be subject to cyclical reviews of their safety plans every few years.

“A school with a plan is better prepared,” Sen. Larry Tidemann, the bill’s sponsor, said.

The full Senate will now review and vote on SB 89. For updates, check the ASBSD Blog and Bill Tracker page.
