School funding committee continues study

Exploration of school funding in South Dakota continues today as the legislative interim committee on school funding reconvenes this afternoon (Monday) and continues tomorrow.

“There was productive conversation, which laid a good foundation for the study last month and we look for that to continue at these meetings,” ASBSD Executive Director Wade Pogany said.

The committee is charged with examining   how the school funding formula affects a district’s decision to seek an opt-out or utilize special tax levies, funding’s effect on graduation and technology’s relation to teaching. June’s meeting focused on the role property taxes play in funding and school districts increased use of capital outlay flexibility.

Committee members will hear presentations on technology’s evolution in school, mobile devices increasing role in classrooms, the operation of the South Dakota Innovative Lab school and other technology related topics beginning today (Monday) at noon.

Tuesday’s session will focus on the programs across the state aimed to help students graduate including, Project Lead the Way, Jobs for American Graduates and SD Gear Up among others.

Tuesday’s session begins at 8 a.m. Live audio of each meeting can be listened to here, (click the SDPB icon to launch).
