Members of the Legislature’s Executive Board appointed Representatives Don Haggar (10) and Jenna Haggar (10) to the legislative interim committee studying school funding on Monday.
The new appointees will fill spots left open by Representatives Paula Hawks (9) and Dick Werner (22), both of whom declined their appointment.
Jenna Haggar was the Vice Chair of the House Education committee this past session. She’ll be reunited with Rep. Jacqueline Sly (33) who was the Chair of the House Education committee and will also chair the funding study committee.
In addition to the Haggars and Sly, the committee includes:
- Sen. Larry Tidemann (7) – Vice Chair
- Sen. Jim Bradford (27)
- Sen. Jean Hunhoff (18)
- Sen. Al Novstrup (3)
- Sen. Billie Sutton (21)
- Sen. Bill Van Gerpen (19)
- Sen. Chuck Welke (2)
- Rep. Dan Dryden (34)
- Rep. Mary Duvall (24)
- Rep. Anne Hajek (14)
- Rep. Kathy Tyler (4)
- Rep. Mike Verchio (30)
Committee members will be asked to examine how the school funding formula affects a district’s decision to seek an opt-out or utilize special tax levies, funding’s effect on graduation and technology’s relation to teaching.
The first committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19.
Prior to that date, ASBSD in conjunction with SASD and Rep. Sly scheduled four meetings across South Dakota for board members and administrators to discuss the study with committee members.
Yesterday (June 11), committee members and educators in the Aberdeen area met to discuss the study.
“There was a great back-and-forth between everyone involved,” Executive Director Wade Pogany said. “The board members and administrators laid out their funding needs and committee members followed up with questions and comments.”
“The more input we get on the matter from both parties the better the study will be.”
The three remaining meeting dates and locations include:
Date | Time | City | Location |
June 17 | 7:00 PM | Rapid City | Outdoor Campus Leopold Room |
June 18 | 2:00 PM | Hartford | West Central High School Theater |
June 18 | 7:00 PM | Mitchell | MTI Technology Center |
There is no registration needed or cost to attend.
