About Associated School Boards of South Dakota:

Associated School Boards of South Dakota is a private, non-profit organization representing more than 850 local school board members, the school districts they govern and the students they serve.

ASBSD provides services and support to local school boards and local school districts, specializing in assisting members with aspects related to the governance of public education. As the state school board association, we advocate in the interest of local school board members for continued advancement of the K-12 education system.

The Position:

Executive Director for Associated School Boards of South Dakota. A minimum salary of $140,000 plus benefits, to be determined by candidate’s education and experience.

Essential Functions:

The position serves as the primary lobbyist for ASBSD and as the main spokesperson and representative of the ASBSD organization. The Executive Director is responsible in directing all functions of ASBSD including, but not limited to:

  • Government relations and advocacy functions
  • Policy services
  • Board training
  • Financial management
  • Programs and events
  • Protective Trust risk pools
  • Teacher placement services

The successful candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for providing excellence in leadership for the Associated School Boards of South Dakota, and ideally will have experience lobbying and with K-12 education.

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Business or School Administration, Public Administration, or other approved fields
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • Lobbying experience strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of K-12 education preferred
  • Travel extensively in-state and frequently out-of-state
  • Minimum 40-hour work week; evening and weekend hours are required.
Nature & Scope:
  • Directs, develops, and carries out ASBSD’s legislative activities, including lobbying, testifying, developing speaking points, and providing information to legislators.
  • Informs ASBSD Board of Directors of all major events, activities, and financial and operational activities of the Association.
  • Directs the planning, coordination, and execution of training functions and educational programs for school board officials.
  • Directs the organization and execution of the ASBSD annual conference and other training throughout the year.
  • Manages and coordinates staff completion of projects.
  • Maintains excellent relationships with schools, elected board members, and their employees.
  • Serves as the secretary of the Protective Trust Board, responsible for its overall operation.
  • Promotes good relationships with the state, local government, their associations, and with industry, trade, and professional groups.
  • Serves as an information resource to schools on education-related topics and fields questions on issues that affect schools.

Terms of Employment:

This is a contracted employee and reports to the ASBSD Board of Directors. The position will be performed to the satisfaction of the ASBSD Board of Directors and the membership of ASBSD.  The position oversees a staff of nine employees.

Position Location:

The Executive Director will live in the immediate Pierre area and will work from the ASBSD offices except for required travel.
