LAN needs A LOT of supportive advocacy voices this session

South Dakota’s public education system needs supportive voices. Many voices.

Our advocacy efforts must be united, informed and ready as the 2023 legislative session is likely to bring legislation with potentially long-reaching harmful effects to public schools, especially to funding.

“Vouchers, tax cuts, uncertain state aid increases, and that’s just the funding side,” ASBSD Executive Director Wade Pogany said. “It’s critical for our public schools that we have plenty of advocacy support.”

To reinforce our advocacy efforts, member districts need to appoint one or more board members to ASBSD’s Legislative Action Network (LAN), which is designed to activate designated members of local school boards to represent the legislative positions of the Association and their local board. Please note, LAN members and Delegates are not the same position.

Each board member designated as a LAN member earns 25 ALL points for their local board.

LAN members will periodically be contacted by ASBSD during legislative session asking them to contact their legislator(s) and advocate for or against a piece of legislation. Each LAN appointee earns a school board 25 ALL points!

The LAN Appointment process is online and can be completed through the following steps:

  1. Click here to access the LAN Appointment form;
  1. Complete the form below;
    • If you have more than one board member to submit as a LAN member, it can be added similar to how a new paragraph is added in a document.
  2. Click the submit button;
    • Should you need to add another board member after you’ve submitted, click the “Submit another response” link.

ASBSD plans to hold three LAN Update webinars next year to provide updates from the 2023 legislative session and discuss the advocacy strategies for LAN members. Each LAN member attending a webinar earns 25 ALL points. To register, click on the link for the corresponding date you’d like to attend and complete the form:

“Board members are elected officials just like the legislators making decisions at the Capitol and we need your voice through LAN to ensure this great public school system is sustained and continues to thrive,” Pogany said.
