ASBSD will continue the coordinating role for the Emergency School Bus Mutual Assistance Pact for school districts to utilize in the event a bus traveling outside of the home district fails.
In the event of an emergency, a school bus driver, or authorized personnel, would contact the nearest district participating in the Bus Pact to secure a bus and/or driver to ensure students are transported to their destination safely.
The district that required assistance must compensate the district that provided assistance for round-trip mileage based on a cost-per-mile basis within 30 days.
The cost-per-mile is based on the level set by the South Dakota Department of Education the previous year. The bus driver from the district that provided assistance would be paid according to the normal rate set by the district in which they are employed, plus any additional stay-over expenses.
Districts that agree to participate in the Emergency School Bus Mutual Assistance Pact should be sure that they have “non-owned and rented vehicle” insurance coverage under their present policy or make immediate arrangements to get such coverage. The additional cost is a negligible consideration.
ASBSD will supply the cooperating districts with a list of emergency phone numbers from participating districts.
Download the bus pact form here and return by Friday, Sept. 12 to:
- Email: Katie@asbsd.org
- Fax: 605-773-2501
- Mail: 306 E Capitol Ave., Pierre, SD 57501.
School districts that do not complete and return the form will not be included in the bus pact.
If you have questions about the bus pact, please contact ASBSD Executive Secretary Katie Mitchell-Boe at Katie@asbsd.org or 605-773-2502.
