ASBSD Board meets for first time in 2017

Members of the ASBSD Board of Directors met for the first time in 2017 and welcomed a new member to the board.

 

Rapid City School Board Member Ron Riherd joined the ASBSD Board of Directors for his meeting representing the district.

Riherd is in his first year on his local board and has extensive experience in education with nearly 40-years dedicated to teaching, 27 of which were spent in Rapid City as a teacher and coach at Rapid City Stevens High School. He added he’s looking forward to working with the ASBSD Board of Directors.

Board members also engaged in a discussion with representatives from the South Dakota Department of Education on the Every Student Succeeds Act.

Board members discussed with DOE representatives a variety topics, including how to measure accountability, what assessment will look like in ESSA, areas of school improvement and methods of reporting.

Representatives from DOE outlined a preliminary timeline for the ESSA process that included a first reading of the plan by the state board of education in May, gathering public input from the time the plan is first read until an input meeting in July and formal submission to the U.S. DOE in September.
