BOE meeting dates, Social Studies standards revised

The state Board of Education has revised its meeting schedule for 2023 and the Department of Education has also made revisions to a portion of the proposed social studies standards.

2023 meeting dates for the S.D. Board of Education Standards include Friday, February 10 in Rapid City, Monday, May 22 in Pierre, Monday, September 18 in Aberdeen and Monday, November 20 in Sioux Falls, but dates, locations and time may be subject to change.

Initially, BOE’s February meeting was scheduled for Saturday, February 11 in Pierre with another hearing on the proposed Social Studies Standards on the agenda. An agenda for the February meeting, and the other meetings, will likely be posted a week in advance on the Boards and Commissions website.

A revised version of the proposed academic content standards for social studies – primarily addressing geography standards and certain translations – is also now available here: https://doe.sd.gov/ContentStandards/documents/Revised-Proposed-SS-Standards-011323.pdf.

The revised proposal, along with a summary of changes, is available on DOE’s website. DOE staff will outline the revisions at the next public hearing for the standards in February. Registration to testify at the February 10 meeting is open on the Boards and Commissions website.

Written public comment may also be provided online or via mail to Department of Education, ATTN: Public Comment, 800 Governors Drive, Pierre, SD 57501.

ASBSD has drafted a sample school board resolution as an option for your board to consider should you wish to collectively state your opposition to the proposed Social Studies Standards, which you can download here.
