Bill cementing local control of curriculum continues on

A bill strengthening a school district’s local control over curriculum and method of instruction decisions is headed across the hall to the Senate after members of the House voted 58-8 in its favor.

House Bill 1101’s prime sponsor Rep. Jacqueline Sly said the bill puts current practice into law ensuring “decisions currently being made at the local level, stay at the local level.”

Discussion on HB 1101 seemed to divert into a debate by some on the Common Core standards, which Rep. Sly noted was part of the motivation for introducing the bill.

“There are concerns…the state has (curriculum and instruction) control,” Rep. Sly said. “(Decision making is) all at the local school district. This bill keeps it that way.”

“The local school board decides,” Rep. Sly said, “not the state board of education.”

ASBSD supports the bill.
