Levy bill leaves House bound for Senate

Members of the House of Representatives passed the annual Cutler-Gabriel adjustment that sets the property tax levies for a school district’s general fund on Monday.

On a 69-0 vote, Representatives sent House Bill 1085 across the hall to the Senate.

Rep. David Lust said the bill is “a vehicle bill more or less,” but necessary to continue the discussion on the levies, which make up the approximately 46 percent of local effort used in the state aid formula, until the legislature determines the funding available for schools at the end of session.

HB 1085 would set the agricultural levy at $2.08 per thousand dollars of valuation, down one cent from last year. The owner-occupied levy would be $4.28 per thousand dollars of valuation, which is a decrease of one cent from last year. Finally, the commercial levy would be $9.19 per thousand dollars of valuation, a one cent drop, as well.
