Teacher Compensation Review Board members appointed

A new board charged with studying South Dakota’s progress on teacher pay has been appointed.

Established in 2016 as part of legislation that overhauled the state’s funding formula, the nine-member Teacher Compensation Review Board will review teacher compensation, including comparable wage indexes in surrounding states.

“The appointees have been made,” Department of Education CFO Tami Darnall told members of the School Finance Accountability Board during their meeting on March 12.

“We are working on getting together that first meeting of the board to find out exactly what information they’d like to review.”

Teacher Compensation Review Board members include Representatives Tom Holmes, David Lust and Julie Bartling, Senators Jim Bolin, Deb Soholt and Troy Heinert, Governor’s Chief of Staff Tony Venhuizen, S.D. Secretary of Education Don Kirkegaard and Aberdeen Superintendent Becky Guffin.

Darnall said the board will meet “over the summer” and expects the study to “mostly be a review of what happened in the past” with teacher pay.

TCRB members will develop potential policy recommendations and are scheduled to submit their findings to Gov. Dennis Daugaard by September 30.
