Policy Alert: ESSA updates

Policies of a school district have the full force and effect of law and legally bind the school district.  Wessington Springs Ed. Assoc. v. Wessington springs Sch. Dist., 467 N.W. 2d 101 (S.D. 1991).

By Gerry Kaufman, ASBSD Director of Policy & Legal Services

Six ASBSD sample policies have been updated to reflect the recent enactment of the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act).

“These updates eliminated references to NCLB (No Child Left Behind) in the policy text and legal references, and replaced those references with ESSA,” Kaufman said.

The affected policies are:

  1. AC: Nondiscrimination in Federal Programs
  2. GBL: Personnel Records
  3. IGBC: Limited English Proficiency Instruction
  4. JOA-E (2): Student Directory Information Opt Out
  5. KMB: Title I Parent Involvement
