A bill expediting the enrollment process of students from military families transferring into a district passed out of legislative committee.
On a unanimous vote, House Military and Veterans Affairs committee members approved an amended version of House Bill 1044, which authorizes enrollment in a school district to which a students’ family is locating to, due to military transfer.
ASBSD assisted Rep. Fred Deutsch, the bill’s prime sponsor, in drafting an amendment for the bill to clarify its intention.
“It’s (the bill) consistent with current statute, consistent with residency requirements and really just streamlines the process,” ASBSD Executive Director Wade Pogany testified.
Students of military families who have been transferred to or are pending transfer to a military installation within the state automatically meet the residency requirements of the district in which their parent or guardian will reside.
“Helps our military folks that are moving here to get things put together for their children,” Rep. Deutsch said of the bill.
ASBSD is monitoring the bill, which now heads to the House floor for review.
