Approps comm. approves bill related to current fiscal year budget

A bill revising funding for the current school year passed out of committee on Thursday (1/25).

Joint Appropriators passed House Bill 1045, which transfers $7.2 million to the general fund to support state aid to education in Fiscal Year 2018, on a unanimous vote.

The revision in funding will cover increases in state aid for the current school year – 2017-18 – and the final number could be adjusted based on revenue figures and budget adjustments for the current fiscal year.

“This number will change throughout the (legislative) session,” S.D. Bureau of Finance and Management Commissioner Liza Clark testified before the committee.

HB 1045 is a step in the budget process for the current fiscal year and won’t have an effect on the proposal of no inflationary increases in state aid for next school year.

“We need to move it along in the process,” Sen. John Wiik said.

ASBSD is supporting the bill, which now moves to the House floor for review.
