Military family residency requirement bill bound for Senate

A bill alleviating residency requirement constraints on students of military families cleared one chamber of the legislature.

On a 65-0 vote, Representatives members approved House Bill 1044, which authorizes enrollment in a school district to which a students’ family is locating to, due to military transfer.

ASBSD is monitoring the bill and assisted in writing an amendment to the bill to bring more clarity to the matter, which specifies that students of military families who have been transferred to or are pending transfer to a military installation within the state automatically meet the residency requirements of the district in which their parent or guardian will reside.

“It’s (the bill) consistent with current statute, consistent with residency requirements and really just streamlines the process,” ASBSD Executive Director Wade Pogany testified during the bill’s committee hearing last week.

The bill now heads to the Senate for review.
